Just Try That in the South!

We love our dogs—hunting dogs, lap dogs, dogs for protection, dogs that guard our livestock, companion dogs, dogs for teaching our children responsibility… Dogs are a huge part of our collective lives, and nowhere more than in the Deep South.

Here's what started all the political hubbub, by a close advisor to Mamdani:

Finally, NYC is coming to Islam. Dogs definitely have a place in society, just not as indoor pets. Like we’ve said all along, they are unclean.

As a child, my family ran Labrador Retrievers in competitive field trials, and Daddy taught my brother and me to work with the dogs, as he was training the dogs themselves. He hunted with them, too. For Dad, the dogs were a hobby, almost a business, as he had invested in a champion bloodline. And he loved his dogs.
Our front yard was expansive enough to accommodate football and baseball games. So when we played there, instead of in the fenced back yard, mom let the dogs out. They would instinctively trot to the front yard, each of them planting themselves on one unprotected side of our corner lot. NOBODY came into our front yard when the dogs were there, and we played on in blissful ignorance of potential threats. To Mom, the dogs were protection… and potentially, law enforcement. And she loved her dogs.
I spent many happy hours with those same dogs lying on top of me in Daddy’s recliner—one at a time, or I would have been smothered. For me, they were contentment. There was nothing better than curling up with a dog as the room darkened, the air came to life, and a thunderstorm rolled in. To this day, I go back there in my mind on stressful days. I loved my dogs.
And now, living alone for the first time ever, my dog is my best bud. He certainly can't replace my husband, but he is good for me because he’s always happy. The only thing wrong with dogs, in my opinion, is that their lifespans are too short.
Have you heard that a substantial percentage of those Christians who have died, gotten a glimpse of heaven, and returned, have reported that our pets are there waiting for us? Not that they have spirits--I don't know how that works. They're there as a gift from God, just because we love them.
Unclean? I can’t think of anything more unclean than the deceptions of islam. I will admit, though, that after summers of running barefoot with dogs, our doctor prescribed an annual course of dewormer before school started!
